SUMMARY:White Bark Pine Restoration Project at Railroad Ridge (new date)
DESCRIPTION:Join Idaho Conservation League\, ICL Wilderness Stewards and the National Forest Foundation for a day of giving back at Railroad Ridge. We will be hand “caching” approximately 10\,000 whitebark pine seeds. Volunteers will be split into teams and distributed across Railroad Ridge. Located in the White Cloud Mountains\, central Idaho’s Railroad Ridge stands above 10\,000 feet and offers incredible views. The area is particularly well adapted for whitebark pine and is a good representation of the whitebark pine ecosystem. The area’s whitebark has been significantly impacted by blister rust and has experienced high levels of mortality. This project will include opportunities to learn more about the importance of whitebark pine while you help to restore its presence on Railroad Ridge. Seeds for this project have been collected over the last few years and are currently held at Lucky Peak nursery. \nPlanting location: White Bark Pine Restoration Project\, East Fork of the Salmon River\, Railroad Ridge\nMeeting time: 9:30 am\nMeeting location: Big Boulder Trailhead\nSpecial Requirements: a sturdy\, high clearance\, 4-wheel drive vehicle with good tires will be necessary to reach the planting site on Railroad Ridge. If volunteers do not have access to a suitable 4-wheel drive vehicle\, shuttling will be provided from the nearby Big Boulder Trailhead. \nVolunteers may choose to camp nearby overnight either the day before or after the event given the long travel to Railroad Ridge. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Vineyard Lake Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Join ICL for a cleanup day at Vineyard Lake in the Snake River Canyon! As hidden as it is\, Vineyard Lake sees a lot of recreationists – and the land there is feeling the impact. ICL and volunteers will meet at the trailhead\, hike in together\, and pick up trash in the area. Following the cleanup\, we will eat lunch and hear from ICL’s Senior Conservation Associate\, Josh Johnson\, about the current state of the beloved Snake River. Space is limited\, so RSVP today to secure your spot! \nTrail condition: The trail begins on top of the canyon rim\, passing through protected private property that is managed as active pastureland with livestock. From there\, the path winds to the edge of the canyon before going down the canyon and over/around crumbled rocks. The 1.5-mile roundtrip hike takes about an hour and has a total elevation gain/drop of roughly 200 feet. A moderate level of physical fitness is required for this hike due to the nature of the terrain. \nWhat to bring: Lunch\, sun protection\, plenty of water\, sturdy hiking shoes.  \nICL will provide: Snacks\, gloves and trash bags. \nRegister Here \n  \nMeeting location and final details will be sent to registrants one week before the event.

SUMMARY:Webinar Series: Energy and our Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:The Idaho Climate-Economy Impacts Assessment is a nonpartisan\, science-based resource to help Idaho business leaders and policymakers plan for a resilient Idaho economy. All assessment content is available online at the website www.uidaho.edu/iceia. \nThe Idaho Conservation League is hosting a 4 part deep dive series into four areas related to their climate campaign work: water\, health\, energy and agriculture.  \nEnergy is both a cause of and solution to our changing climate\, according to the recent Idaho Climate-Economy Impacts Assessment from the McClure Center at University of Idaho. Join us in a discussion of the risks and opportunities in Idaho’s energy sector as part three of ICL’s four-part series about this landmark report. Amber Bieg from Warm Springs Consulting and ICL’s own Ben Otto\, will discuss how climate change is affecting the hydrosystem\, how economic and environmental forces are causing utilities to reduce the fossil-fuels we import from other states\, and Idaho’s opportunity to use the energy sources within our borders to secure a clean\, reliable\, and affordable future for Idaho. We look forward to your questions as well.

SUMMARY:ICL Webinar Series: What's in the Magic Valley's groundwater?
DESCRIPTION:Over 300\,000 residents of southern Idaho rely on groundwater from the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer for their drinking water. A recent report by ICL looked at the quality of groundwater across the Magic Valley and found that in many areas\, there are unacceptably high levels of nitrate and phosphorus in drinking water. High nitrate is linked to health conditions such as Blue Baby Syndrome and elevated cancer risk in adults and elevated phosphorus concentrations exacerbate ongoing water quality issues in the Snake River\, such as harmful algal outbreaks.\n\n\nJoin us at this webinar to learn about what’s in your drinking water and how we are working to address these contamination issues. Hear from ICL’s Conservation Associate\, Josh Johnson\, as he provides an overview of the latest report and what it means for you.\n\n\nThis webinar occurs at 6:30 PM MTN

SUMMARY:Red Road to DC - A Totem Pole Journey
DESCRIPTION:The House of Tears Carvers cordially invite you to our visit and blessing ceremony at Shoshone Falls Overlook on the Snake River in Twin Falls\, ID from 4:00-5:00 pm MDT on July 1.\n\nShoshone Falls are named for the Lemhi Shoshone or Agaidika (“Salmon eaters”) people. The Shoshone\, Bannock and Paiute peoples depended on the Snake River’s immense salmon runs as their primary food source. Before dams on the Snake River blocked the migration of salmon from the Pacific Ocean\, the falls were the upstream limit of salmon migration in the Snake River – 647 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River.\n\nPlease join us as we continue our journey to draw attention and action to sacred places and Indigenous rights. Idaho Rivers United\, Idaho Conservation League\, Idaho Chapter of the Sierra Club\, Trout Unlimited and the upper Snake River Salmon People are co-hosting this event. Please note that a $5 park entrance fee will be charged to each vehicle entering the Park.\n\nThis summer\, the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation are transporting a 24-foot totem pole they carved from Washington State to Washington D.C. As this pole travels it draws lines of connection–honoring\, uniting and empowering communities working to protect sacred places. It carries the spirit of the lands it visits and the power and prayers of communities along the way. \n\nFor more information and event itinerary\, please visit the Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Public Lands Comment Workshop: Kilgore Project
DESCRIPTION:Join Idaho Conservation League and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition for a workshop on the Kilgore proiect\, a mining exploration proposal that threatens Idaho’s public lands\, wildlife\, and water. You’ll hear from ICL and GYC staff about the Kilgore project and learn tips about crafting your personal comments to the U.S. Forest Service.  \nIn January 2021\, the U.S. Forest Service released a new Draft Environmental Assessment for a gold exploration proposal in the Centennial Mountains near Kilgore\, north of Idaho Falls on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The proposed intensive road construction and exploratory drilling would degrade important habitat for grizzly bears\, lynx\, whitebark pine\, and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Now\, there is an opportunity for Idahoans to weigh in on the proposed exploration project and voice their concerns about its impacts to the area’s water\, wildlife\, and outdoor recreation access. \nJoin us for this informative and empowering workshop to speak up for Idaho’s public lands.  \nRegister now for this workshop!  \n  \nPhoto: Tony Huegel
