SUMMARY:ICL Webinar Series: What's in the Magic Valley's groundwater?
DESCRIPTION:Over 300\,000 residents of southern Idaho rely on groundwater from the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer for their drinking water. A recent report by ICL looked at the quality of groundwater across the Magic Valley and found that in many areas\, there are unacceptably high levels of nitrate and phosphorus in drinking water. High nitrate is linked to health conditions such as Blue Baby Syndrome and elevated cancer risk in adults and elevated phosphorus concentrations exacerbate ongoing water quality issues in the Snake River\, such as harmful algal outbreaks.\n\n\nJoin us at this webinar to learn about what’s in your drinking water and how we are working to address these contamination issues. DESCRIPTION:The House of Tears Carvers cordially invite you to our visit and blessing ceremony at Shoshone Falls Overlook on the Snake River in Twin Falls\, ID from 4:00-5:00 pm MDT on July 1.\n\nShoshone Falls are named for the Lemhi Shoshone or Agaidika (“Salmon eaters”) people. The Shoshone\, Bannock and Paiute peoples depended on the Snake River’s immense salmon runs as their primary food source. Before dams on the Snake River blocked the migration of salmon from the Pacific Ocean\, the falls were the upstream limit of salmon migration in the Snake River – 647 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River.\n\nPlease join us as we continue our journey to draw attention and action to sacred places and Indigenous rights. Idaho Rivers United\, Idaho Conservation League\, Idaho Chapter of the Sierra Club\, Trout Unlimited and the upper Snake River Salmon People are co-hosting this event. Please note that a $5 park entrance fee will be charged to each vehicle entering the Park.\n\nThis summer\, the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation are transporting a 24-foot totem pole they carved from Washington State to Washington D.C. DESCRIPTION:Join Idaho Conservation League and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition for a workshop on the Kilgore proiect\, a mining exploration proposal that threatens Idaho’s public lands\, wildlife\, and water. You’ll hear from ICL and GYC staff about the Kilgore project and learn tips about crafting your personal comments to the U.S. Forest Service.  \nIn January 2021\, the U.S. Forest Service released a new Draft Environmental Assessment for a gold exploration proposal in the Centennial Mountains near Kilgore\, north of Idaho Falls on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The proposed intensive road construction and exploratory drilling would degrade important habitat for grizzly bears\, lynx\, whitebark pine\, and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. DESCRIPTION:A clean\, healthy\, and safe Snake River benefits all of us. Join ICL for a webinar panel discussion with our partners from the Clif Bar Bakery in Twin Falls\, Idaho Power\, and the Twin Falls Canal Company to hear about water quality in the Magic Valley. We will share our vision for a healthy and safe Snake River and join in conversation with our partners to highlight the restoration efforts underway that improve water quality and protect the river. \nPanelists \n\nWade Allred\, Environmental Health Safety and Sustainability Manager CLIF Bar Bakery\nRalph Myers\, Environmental Manager: Water Quality Program\, Idaho Power Company\nBrian Olmstead\, General Manager\, Twin Falls Canal Company.\n\nICL was founded to be a strong voice for clean water. Our long-term goal is to make the Snake River across southern Idaho safe\, fishable and swimmable again. Water quality in the Snake River and the aquifer affects everyone in the Magic Valley and we all share a responsibility to address the issue. DESCRIPTION:Give back to Idaho’s Sawtooth Valley this fall! The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) needs your help to recover from the impacts of this busy summer season. The COVID-19 pandemic drew record numbers of visitors to the SNRA\, impacting both natural resources and recreational experiences. But you can help! Grab your family\, friends\, neighbors or co-workers and join your community in a COVID friendly cleanup.
