SUMMARY:Grizzlies in Idaho: A look at where we are headed – Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) made the right call when they denied a petition by the State of Idaho to remove ALL grizzly bear populations in the lower 48 from the endangered species list. Recovery goals for grizzly bear populations in North and North Central Idaho have not been achieved\, and Idaho isn’t prepared to take on the primary role of grizzly bear management within our borders. \nOn the same day that the USFWS denied Idaho’s petition\, the agency found that petitions by the States of Montana and Wyoming to remove the Northern Continental Divide and Yellowstone grizzly bear populations “may be warranted.” No matter what\, delisting grizzly populations should only occur after recovery goals have been met. In North and North Central Idaho\, more work is needed to recover the Selkirk\, Cabinet-Yaak\, and Bitterroot grizzly populations.  \nJeff Abrams\, ICL’s Wildlife Associate and Brad Smith\, ICL’s North Idaho Director team up to bring you the latest news about the state of Idaho’s petitions to remove grizzlies from the endangered species list. What does it mean and where does ICL think it’s headed? Join us for this informative webinar and learn about ways to take action on this issue.

SUMMARY:"Our Sacred Obligation" Film Screening - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:From the Elwha River to the Klamath\, this powerful moment in history is only possible because of Indigenous leadership to restore life-sustaining salmon to abundance. SUMMARY:Voices for the West: Enlightened by Dark Sky - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join  ICL and Advocates for the West for the next Voices for the West webinar to discuss the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve. The Reserve is a treasured resource for all Idahoans and visitors from across the world that come to experience the wonder of the starry night sky and is the result of a collective commitment by communities\, public land managers\, and private landowners to support the dark sky experience. Designated in 2017\, the Reserve is the first International Dark Sky Reserve in the U.S. and only the twelfth Dark Sky Reserve worldwide. \nThe designation represents nearly two decades of planning efforts and policy decisions by city and county leaders\, local businesses and organizations\, and public land managers. Working together\, these partners continue to focus on preserving the quality of the night-time environment and reducing the impact of light pollution in the area. We’re excited to be joined by the Idaho Conservation League’s (ICL) Central Idaho Director Betsy Mizell\, ICL Board Member Matt Benjamin\, and Idaho Dark Sky Alliance President Carol Cole. Voices for the West is a monthly webinar brought to you by Advocates for the West. \n\n\nPhoto by Nils Ribi Photography.

SUMMARY:Stop Stibnite: Comment Writing Workshop - Boise
DESCRIPTION:Perpetua Resources is moving forward with plans to construct the Stibnite Gold Project\, an immense open pit\, cyanide vat leach gold mine in the headwaters of the East Fork South Fork of the Salmon River.  \nThese headwaters provide critical habitat for Idaho’s wild fish\, important habitat for wildlife like wolverine and amazing opportunities for recreation. \nThe Forest Service recently released the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) which describes the effects of the mine. Although Perpetua refers to the project as a restoration plan\, the SDEIS shows that mining activities will actually further degrade critical elements such as habitat for bull trout.  \nLocal conservation groups are encouraging members of the public and businesses to closely review the SDEIS and voice their concerns at the public meetings held by the Forest Service. \nJoin the Idaho Conservation League\, Idaho Rivers United\, and Save the South Fork to learn more about the permitting process\, the effects of the Stibnite Gold Project and how to make your comments more effective.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Science Pub - McCall
DESCRIPTION:Based on the Science Cafe model developed in Europe in the 1990s\, ICL is pleased to present Science Pub as a fun way to bring educators\, scientists\, presenters\, and the public together. Come on out\, grab a beer\, and hear about our wildlife program with Jeff Abrams\, ICL’s new wildlife associate! \nIdahoans care deeply about the native creatures that call the Gem State home. Historically\, conservation efforts have focused almost exclusively on game animals. In recent years\, however\, science has told us that the threats facing the overwhelming majority of Idaho’s wildlife must be addressed with a much broader conservation management perspective\, emphasizing diversity and resiliency. Going forward\, habitat concerns and climate change will increasingly be at the center of comprehensive efforts to ensure security for all Idaho’s critters – from woodpeckers and Big-Eared bats to fishers and wolverines. \nPlease join ICL\, as we host a conversation about our renewed emphasis on Idaho’s wildlife and emerging ideas about managing all species across the landscape to address the increasing challenges they face. No RSVP or scientific background is required. Just bring your curiosity\, sense of humor\, and appetite for drinks and knowledge!

SUMMARY:North Fork Owyhee Wilderness Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:The 44\,000 acre North Fork Owyhee Wilderness includes a maze of incised canyons\, a mosaic of sagebrush and juniper woodlands\, and no designated trails. This wilderness is among the 532\,000 acres of wilderness areas that were the outcome of the Owyhee Initiative\, a collaborative effort among conservationists\, ranchers\, sportsmen\, recreationists and others. \n\nGet to know this amazing area by joining ICL and Owhyee backcountry rangers\, as we remove old pasture and allotment fences that are no longer needed for livestock management. The work entails hauling out fence materials such as T posts and barbed wire across rugged terrain. \n\nThis is an overnight trip as the travel time to the site is approximately 2.5 hours from Boise. We will be meeting where the Owyhee Uplands Scenic Byway (aka the Mud Flat Road) crosses Deep Creek. We will meet at the Deep Creek bridge on Saturday October 22 at 12 noon\, work for several hours\, camp overnight next to our vehicles\, resume working Sunday morning and depart Sunday afternoon. \n\nEquipment needed: Leather gloves\, long sleeved shirts and pants\, work boots\, food\, water\, clothes for cold weather and car camping gear. \n\nPlease RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Science Pub - The Future of Baldy's Forests
DESCRIPTION:In 1939\, Bald Mountain opened to skiing\, forever changing the Wood River Valley and the winter recreation industry. However\, over the last 20 years\, this iconic mountain’s trees have been increasingly threatened by wildfire\, a growing bark beetle infestation\, and multiple disease outbreaks. To protect our community’s signature mountain\, collaborative efforts have now been underway for several years to secure the future of our treasured ski mountain and its forests (while creating some excellent new tree skiing in the process). \nQuench your thirst for knowledge and join the Idaho Conservation League and USFS for an exciting presentation on the latest forest restoration efforts on Baldy.  Speakers will discuss the state of Baldy’s forests and ongoing efforts to address their declining health\, forest ecology\, and upcoming opportunities to be involved with community initiatives to save Baldy’s forests (not to mention a sneak peek at the new gladed skiing from this summer’s forest health work!).  \nEvent speakers: \n\nJosh Johnson\, ICL’s Senior Conservation Associate\nZach Poff\, (Acting) Program Manager Forest Legacy & Community Forest and Open Space Programs with USFS\n\nBased on the Science Cafe model developed in Europe in the 1990s\, ICL is pleased to present Science Pub as a fun way to bring educators\, scientists\, presenters and the public together. Come on out\, grab a beer and join in on the informal discussions around scientific topics and environmental issues. No RSVP or scientific background is required.
