SUMMARY:Wildlife Science Pub - Boise
DESCRIPTION:Based on the Science Cafe model developed in Europe in the 1990s\, ICL is pleased to present Science Pub as a fun way to bring educators\, scientists\, presenters\, and the public together. Come on out\, grab a beer\, and hear about our wildlife program with Jeff Abrams\, ICL’s new wildlife associate! \nIdahoans care deeply about the native creatures that call the Gem State home. Historically\, conservation efforts have focused almost exclusively on game animals. In recent years\, however\, science has told us that the threats facing the overwhelming majority of Idaho’s wildlife must be addressed with a much broader conservation management perspective\, emphasizing diversity and resiliency. Going forward\, habitat concerns and climate change will increasingly be at the center of comprehensive efforts to ensure security for all Idaho’s critters – from woodpeckers and Big-Eared bats to fishers and wolverines. \nPlease join ICL\, as we host a conversation about our renewed emphasis on Idaho’s wildlife and emerging ideas about managing all species across the landscape to address the increasing challenges they face. No RSVP or scientific background is required. Just bring your curiosity\, sense of humor\, and appetite for drinks and knowledge!

SUMMARY:North Fork Owyhee Wilderness Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:The 44\,000 acre North Fork Owyhee Wilderness includes a maze of incised canyons\, a mosaic of sagebrush and juniper woodlands\, and no designated trails. This wilderness is among the 532\,000 acres of wilderness areas that were the outcome of the Owyhee Initiative\, a collaborative effort among conservationists\, ranchers\, sportsmen\, recreationists and others. \n\nGet to know this amazing area by joining ICL and Owhyee backcountry rangers\, as we remove old pasture and allotment fences that are no longer needed for livestock management. The work entails hauling out fence materials such as T posts and barbed wire across rugged terrain. \n\nThis is an overnight trip as the travel time to the site is approximately 2.5 hours from Boise. We will be meeting where the Owyhee Uplands Scenic Byway (aka the Mud Flat Road) crosses Deep Creek. We will meet at the Deep Creek bridge on Saturday October 22 at 12 noon\, work for several hours\, camp overnight next to our vehicles\, resume working Sunday morning and depart Sunday afternoon. \n\nEquipment needed: Leather gloves\, long sleeved shirts and pants\, work boots\, food\, water\, clothes for cold weather and car camping gear. \n\nPlease RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Science Pub - The Future of Baldy's Forests
DESCRIPTION:In 1939\, Bald Mountain opened to skiing\, forever changing the Wood River Valley and the winter recreation industry. However\, over the last 20 years\, this iconic mountain’s trees have been increasingly threatened by wildfire\, a growing bark beetle infestation\, and multiple disease outbreaks. To protect our community’s signature mountain\, collaborative efforts have now been underway for several years to secure the future of our treasured ski mountain and its forests (while creating some excellent new tree skiing in the process). \nQuench your thirst for knowledge and join the Idaho Conservation League and USFS for an exciting presentation on the latest forest restoration efforts on Baldy.  Speakers will discuss the state of Baldy’s forests and ongoing efforts to address their declining health\, forest ecology\, and upcoming opportunities to be involved with community initiatives to save Baldy’s forests (not to mention a sneak peek at the new gladed skiing from this summer’s forest health work!).  \nEvent speakers: \n\nJosh Johnson\, ICL’s Senior Conservation Associate\nZach Poff\, (Acting) Program Manager Forest Legacy & Community Forest and Open Space Programs with USFS\n\nBased on the Science Cafe model developed in Europe in the 1990s\, ICL is pleased to present Science Pub as a fun way to bring educators\, scientists\, presenters and the public together. Come on out\, grab a beer and join in on the informal discussions around scientific topics and environmental issues. No RSVP or scientific background is required. Just bring your curiosity\, sense of humor\, and appetite for drinks and knowledge!

SUMMARY:Webinar: Solar for All
DESCRIPTION:Idaho Power recently published a study that shows it intends to slash compensation rates to local solar owners by over 60%\, making solar power less affordable for Idaho families\, businesses\, farms\, and schools. \nWe need your help to tell the Idaho Public Utilities Commission that Idaho Power’s study is not fair or credible and that it presents an artificially low value of solar that will prevent residents from exercising their right to energy independence. \nJoin ICL and partners for a webinar to learn how to speak up for affordable\, locally-owned solar! \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:White Bark Pine Restoration Project at Railroad Ridge (new date)
DESCRIPTION:Join Idaho Conservation League\, ICL Wilderness Stewards and the National Forest Foundation for a day of giving back at Railroad Ridge. We will be hand “caching” approximately 10\,000 whitebark pine seeds. Volunteers will be split into teams and distributed across Railroad Ridge. Located in the White Cloud Mountains\, central Idaho’s Railroad Ridge stands above 10\,000 feet and offers incredible views. The area is particularly well adapted for whitebark pine and is a good representation of the whitebark pine ecosystem. The area’s whitebark has been significantly impacted by blister rust and has experienced high levels of mortality. This project will include opportunities to learn more about the importance of whitebark pine while you help to restore its presence on Railroad Ridge. Seeds for this project have been collected over the last few years and are currently held at Lucky Peak nursery. \nPlanting location: White Bark Pine Restoration Project\, East Fork of the Salmon River\, Railroad Ridge\nMeeting time: 9:30 am\nMeeting location: Big Boulder Trailhead\nSpecial Requirements: a sturdy\, high clearance\, 4-wheel drive vehicle with good tires will be necessary to reach the planting site on Railroad Ridge. If volunteers do not have access to a suitable 4-wheel drive vehicle\, shuttling will be provided from the nearby Big Boulder Trailhead. \nVolunteers may choose to camp nearby overnight either the day before or after the event given the long travel to Railroad Ridge. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Vineyard Lake Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Join ICL for a cleanup day at Vineyard Lake in the Snake River Canyon! As hidden as it is\, Vineyard Lake sees a lot of recreationists – and the land there is feeling the impact. ICL and volunteers will meet at the trailhead\, hike in together\, and pick up trash in the area. Following the cleanup\, we will eat lunch and hear from ICL’s Senior Conservation Associate\, Josh Johnson\, about the current state of the beloved Snake River. Space is limited\, so RSVP today to secure your spot! \nTrail condition: The trail begins on top of the canyon rim\, passing through protected private property that is managed as active pastureland with livestock. From there\, the path winds to the edge of the canyon before going down the canyon and over/around crumbled rocks. The 1.5-mile roundtrip hike takes about an hour and has a total elevation gain/drop of roughly 200 feet. A moderate level of physical fitness is required for this hike due to the nature of the terrain. \nWhat to bring: Lunch\, sun protection\, plenty of water\, sturdy hiking shoes.  \nICL will provide: Snacks\, gloves and trash bags. \nRegister Here \n  \nMeeting location and final details will be sent to registrants one week before the event.

SUMMARY:Water Quality Monitoring Program Training
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to help protect Lake Pend Oreille for now and future generations? Join the Water Quality Monitoring Program! Our next training is May 10th\, 5:30pm – 6:30pm PST. \nThe Water Quality Monitoring Program (WQMP) is a consistent\, long-term monitoring effort to measure water quality across Lake Pend Oreille and the Pend Oreille River. This is a citizen-science initiative led by dedicated community volunteers. The program’s goals are to inform the public and provide high-quality scientific data that regulatory agencies can use when making water quality-based decisions for our local waterways. Each site is evaluated for 11 different biological\, chemical\, and physical tests\, and monitoring occurs once a month from May through September. \nTo participate in this program\, volunteers are required to attend a training at Windbag Marina. Registration is not required\, and you do not need to bring any materials with you to this training. It may be chilly by the water in the evening\, so please keep that in mind if you plan on attending! \nEmail Becca Rodack if you have questions\, brodack@idahoconservation.org. \nWe hope to see you there!
