SUMMARY:Red Road to DC - A Totem Pole Journey
DESCRIPTION:The House of Tears Carvers cordially invite you to our visit and blessing ceremony at Shoshone Falls Overlook on the Snake River in Twin Falls\, ID from 4:00-5:00 pm MDT on July 1.\n\nShoshone Falls are named for the Lemhi Shoshone or Agaidika (“Salmon eaters”) people. The Shoshone\, Bannock and Paiute peoples depended on the Snake River’s immense salmon runs as their primary food source. Before dams on the Snake River blocked the migration of salmon from the Pacific Ocean\, the falls were the upstream limit of salmon migration in the Snake River – 647 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River.\n\nPlease join us as we continue our journey to draw attention and action to sacred places and Indigenous rights. Idaho Rivers United\, Idaho Conservation League\, Idaho Chapter of the Sierra Club\, Trout Unlimited and the upper Snake River Salmon People are co-hosting this event. Please note that a $5 park entrance fee will be charged to each vehicle entering the Park.\n\nThis summer\, the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation are transporting a 24-foot totem pole they carved from Washington State to Washington D.C. As this pole travels it draws lines of connection–honoring\, uniting and empowering communities working to protect sacred places. It carries the spirit of the lands it visits and the power and prayers of communities along the way. \n\nFor more information and event itinerary\, please visit the Facebook page.

DESCRIPTION:The House of Tears Carvers cordially invite you to our visit and blessing ceremony at the Shoshone-Bannock Casino Hotel on Thursday\, July 1 from 10:00 am- 11:00 am MDT\, hosted by the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes\, as we continue our journey to draw attention and action to sacred places and Indigenous rights.\n\nThis summer\, the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation are transporting a 24-foot totem pole they carved from Washington State to Washington D.C. SUMMARY:ICL Webinar Series: Northwest in Transition and the Magic Valley
DESCRIPTION:Congressman Mike Simpson’s “Northwest in Transition” proposal would restore Idaho salmon and invest in communities\, jobs\, clean energy\, and healthy farming communities across our state and the Northwest. But what does Rep. Mike Simpson’s Northwest in Transition plan mean for Idaho’s Magic Valley? How would the proposal impact agriculture\, water quality\, and watershed management in southern Idaho? Rep. Simpson’s concept proposes to invest $1.2 billion specifically for watershed restoration and manure management efforts in the Snake River Basin\, including in southern Idaho.  \nJoin ICL for a lunchtime conversation about how Rep. Simpson’s plan supports the Magic Valley’s economy and environment. You’ll hear from ICL’s Snake River staff Jonathan Oppenheimer and Josh Johnson and there will be  ample time to answer your questions about the proposal. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UuQ9Vgx8QBij3nXu8vVgWg \n

SUMMARY:Public Lands Comment Workshop: Kilgore Project
DESCRIPTION:Join Idaho Conservation League and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition for a workshop on the Kilgore proiect\, a mining exploration proposal that threatens Idaho’s public lands\, wildlife\, and water. You’ll hear from ICL and GYC staff about the Kilgore project and learn tips about crafting your personal comments to the U.S. Forest Service.  \nIn January 2021\, the U.S. Forest Service released a new Draft Environmental Assessment for a gold exploration proposal in the Centennial Mountains near Kilgore\, north of Idaho Falls on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The proposed intensive road construction and exploratory drilling would degrade important habitat for grizzly bears\, lynx\, whitebark pine\, and Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Now\, there is an opportunity for Idahoans to weigh in on the proposed exploration project and voice their concerns about its impacts to the area’s water\, wildlife\, and outdoor recreation access. \nJoin us for this informative and empowering workshop to speak up for Idaho’s public lands.  \nRegister now for this workshop!  \n  \nPhoto: Tony Huegel

SUMMARY:Clean Water Panel: Restoring the Snake River
DESCRIPTION:A clean\, healthy\, and safe Snake River benefits all of us. Join ICL for a webinar panel discussion with our partners from the Clif Bar Bakery in Twin Falls\, Idaho Power\, and the Twin Falls Canal Company to hear about water quality in the Magic Valley. We will share our vision for a healthy and safe Snake River and join in conversation with our partners to highlight the restoration efforts underway that improve water quality and protect the river. \nPanelists \n\nWade Allred\, Environmental Health Safety and Sustainability Manager CLIF Bar Bakery\nRalph Myers\, Environmental Manager: Water Quality Program\, Idaho Power Company\nBrian Olmstead\, General Manager\, Twin Falls Canal Company.\n\nICL was founded to be a strong voice for clean water. Our long-term goal is to make the Snake River across southern Idaho safe\, fishable and swimmable again. Water quality in the Snake River and the aquifer affects everyone in the Magic Valley and we all share a responsibility to address the issue. Our vision will likely require a large state-federal cleanup plan akin to restoration efforts in the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay. \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Safe\, Swimmable and Fishable: Envisioning a Clean Future for the Snake River
DESCRIPTION:Join Idaho Conservation League for a webinar where you’ll learn about our vision for a clean and safe Snake River. Agricultural runoff and other pollutants have contributed to declining water quality for the Snake River and its associated aquifer\, threatening Idaho’s precious drinking water. Rising nitrate and phosphorus concentrations in the Magic Valley’s groundwater continue to be a problem that has serious implications for public health and the state’s ability to meet its water quality standards. \nICL was founded to be a strong voice for clean water. Our long-term goal is to make the Snake River across southern Idaho safe\, fishable and swimmable again. To do so will likely require a large state-federal cleanup plan akin to restoration efforts in the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay. \nYou’ll hear from ICL’s Conservation Associate Josh Johnson about the declining water quality in the Snake River and aquifer and the path forward for cleaning up the Snake. Join us to learn how you can get involved and take action! \nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Virtual Public Hearing: Protect Kootenai River From Selenium Pollution
DESCRIPTION:Selenium from coal mines in British Columbia\, Canada is contaminating the Kootenai River in Idaho. The selenium pollution is carried downstream from the Elk and Fording Rivers into Lake Koocanusa and across the border into Montana. Water released from Lake Koocanusa through Libby Dam then flows west into Idaho carrying selenium pollution with it. \nSelenium pollution is a problem because it accumulates in the bodies of fish and other aquatic wildlife. Toxicological effects of selenium in fish include reduced growth\, deformities\, reduces liver function\, and reduced reproduction. For example\, anglers have caught cutthroat trout in the streams below the coal mines with no gill plates. Also\, eating fish with high levels of selenium can be harmful to people. \nFortunately\, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is taking steps to curb selenium pollution. Our neighbors in Montana are proposing a new set of limits on selenium pollution in Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River. Because we are downstream\, the proposed limits will benefit the Kootenai River in Idaho. \nTeck Resources\, which operates the coal mines\, is trying to undermine and delay Montana’s efforts to adopt limits on selenium pollution at the border. The proposed selenium limits would be enforced under an international treaty between the United States and Canada. \n  \nTake Action! Tune into the virtual public hearing on Thursday\, November 5th from 9-11 am PST / 10 am-12 pm MST. Your voice and testimony are critical to show Montana your support for their proposed limits on selenium pollution. No need to be technical or detailed\, just share your story and express what this issue and these proposed limits on selenium pollution mean to you. Your personal experience is powerful and helps humanize this issue! \nRegistration for this public hearing via Zoom may be made at the following link: http://bit.ly/MTseleniumhearing \n  \nCan’t attend the public hearing? You can still take action by submitting your personalized comment: https://p2a.co/j4Zm02Z \nShare your story and what these proposed limits on selenium pollution mean to you. Deadline to submit your personalized comment is Monday\, November 23rd by 4 pm PT.
