SUMMARY:A Decade of Wilderness: Boulder-White Clouds Hiking Series - Ketchum\, ID
DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago this summer\, the Boulder-White Clouds were permanently protected – a historic achievement that took the efforts of ICL and its supporters decades to make a reality. In celebration of a decade of protections for this special place\, we’d like to invite you to join ICL on a summer hiking series throughout the protected areas.  \nSpace is very limited due to Wilderness regulations (maximum group size is 12 people)\, so please sign up in advance and note that the start time is the time we will be meeting at the listed trailhead. \nWednesday\, September 10th 8:30am – 3:30pm North Fork of the Bigwood River \nThis beautiful valley follows the North Fork of the Bigwood River as it flows off the Boulder Divide and down the slopes of some of the largest mountains in the area. The trail is out-and-back with moderate vertical gain (about 1\,000 ft) over about 6 miles. We’ll head into the heart of the Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness\, and you’ll feel the true “out there” feelings that define Wilderness. \nMeeting Place: North Fork Wood River trailhead (the end of the road past the SNRA headquarters)\, about 30 minutes from Ketchum – four-wheel drive vehicle recommended – carpools available if you need a ride. \nREGISTER HERE!

SUMMARY:Kilgore Gold Exploration Community Site Tour & Lunch - Dubois\, ID
DESCRIPTION:Join ICL’s partners at the Clean Kilgore Coalition for a free lunch and tour of the Kilgore Gold Exploration Site\, where a toxic open-pit\, heap-leach\, cyanide gold mine threatens the Centennial Mountains and the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer. \nThe Centennial Mountains and surrounding foothills have long played host to family farms and ranches\, lush meadows\, clear streams\, and iconic wildlife species. Now\, a financially unstable foreign mining company plans to methodically dismantle the forested hillsides in search of gold\, threatening to mar the landscape forever and pollute this quiet swath of public land with toxic mining waste.  \nCome join the Clean Kilgore Coalition to explore what makes Kilgore special\, and why it’s no place for an open-pit\, heap-leach cyanide gold mine. \nREGISTER HERE!

\nWednesday\, July 9th\, 8:30am – 10:00am: Murdock Creek \nThis 3-mile out and back trail along Murdock Creek is absolutely stunning\, and one of the most accessible ways to experience the Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness area from the Wood River Valley. The trail is flat and wide\, and we expect round-trip timing to be about 1.5 hours. Meeting place: Murdock Creek Trailhead (about 15 minutes from Ketchum). \nREGISTER HERE! \nCan’t make it on July 9th? We’re also hosting hikes on August 7th and September 10th.

SUMMARY:Stewarding the Sawtooths - Ketchum\, ID
DESCRIPTION:The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) is the crown jewel of Idaho’s public lands\, encompassing 756\,000 acres of jagged mountains\, alpine lakes\, and key salmon spawning grounds. The SNRA exists to preserve and protect the area’s natural\, scenic\, historic\, pastoral and fish and wildlife values and to provide for the enhancement of the area’s recreation values. But what happens when there are not enough staff or budget for the Forest Service to capably manage this expansive and heavily visited area? \nThis presentation will trace the story of the SNRA from its purposeful creation in 1972 through to the challenges the Area faces in the present day due to larger threats to Idaho’s public lands. We will discuss what those challenges are currently and what organizations\, programs\, and partnerships exist to help steward the SNRA through these turbulent times. \nThe presentation will feature a group of speakers who are intimately familiar with the SNRA: \nKathryn Grohusky is the Executive Director of the Sawtooth Society\, a nonpartisan organization founded in 1997 by politicians\, advocates\, and local residents that shared a collective love of the Sawtooth Valley. The Sawtooth Society accomplishes its mission of preserving\, protecting\, and enhancing the Sawtooth National Recreation Area through advocacy\, partnerships\, and stewardship. \nJosh Johnson is the Central Idaho Director for the Idaho Conservation League\, a statewide environmental advocacy organization that has worked since 1973 to protect Idaho’s environment\, including its amazing public lands like the SNRA. \nKen Paur retired as the Regional Attorney for the Mountain Region of the USDA Office of the General Counsel at the end of 2020. Ken began working for OGC in 1991 as an attorney in the Ogden office where he advised the Forest Service regarding administration of the SNRA and the scenic easement program\, and was assigned to most of the lawsuits concerning the SNRA.\n\nThis program will be livestreamed and available to watch later on the Library’s Event Archive. Registration recommended to join us in person\, and registration required to receive the Vimeo link to watch online: https://thecommunitylibrary.libcal.com/event/14388878
